Teacher Education

Many observers, volunteers, practicum students, clinical experience students, and visitors from other schools visit our classrooms to observe the lab school students and faculty daily. We are pleased to have observers and enjoy helping you develop into quality educators. In order to assist you in developing professional behaviors, we would like you to follow these guidelines.

  1. Arrive on time and remain until the end of the assigned time.
  2. Sign in on the observer sheet inside the classroom door and feel free to sit in any available chair.
  3. All observers MUST WEAR THEIR ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY PHOTO ID when in the building. Plastic sleeves to hold the ID may be purchased from the Main Office at Metcalf, the University bookstore, and the Clinical Experience Office in DeGarmo Hall.
  4. Dress in a professional manner. Please remove any body piercing which may be visible, as they are distracting to our students. Please refrain from wearing halter/spaghetti strap tops, low cut or revealing clothing, or hats. Metcalf faculty associates may ask you to reschedule your observation or field experience time, and return when dressed more professionally. To reschedule, see guidelines below.
  5. We discourage requests for the teachers to sign observation forms. However, if it is necessary, it is YOUR responsibility to come in at a time convenient for the METCALF teacher AFTER you have completed the observation. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE YOU TO INTERUPT A LESSON FOR A SIGNATURE!
  6. Food, beverages, or gum may not be brought into classrooms.
  7. Be attentive and quiet during observations. Books, newspapers, etc. should be read at a later time. It is important that you refrain from talking during class sessions, even if the students are engaged in conversations or small group work. Your conversations will be distracting.
  8. Absolutely NO student or teacher names should be used in written observation summaries or reports to ensure confidentiality for all parties involved.
  9. Conduct yourself as a professional at all times. Remember to keep matters concerning students confidential. Confidentiality is a right that is guaranteed to our students and one which is very important to them and to us. Never discuss or comment on students in their presence. This can be a very uncomfortable situation for the students in the classroom.

Guidelines for Rescheduling an Observation:

It is YOUR responsibility to fulfill your observation schedule. Should you need to reschedule an observation, please adhere to the following process: (Please do not email or phone the teacher that you are scheduled to observe).

  • If your window for reservations is still open, you need to login to SuperSaas (just as you did when you initially made reservations for your observations). You must first delete the reservation that you did not/cannot attend.
  • Once you have deleted this reservation, you may then continue to schedule your new observation. You will not be able to reschedule an observation if you have not deleted a previous one.
  • If the window for registration for your class is closed, you will no longer be able to login to SuperSaas. Therefore, you must first go to your ISU instructor and inform them that you need to reschedule an observation(s).
  • If deemed an appropriate use of a reschedule, your ISU professor must then contact either Kathy Taylor (mktaylo@ilstu.edu) or Jodi Lareau (jllarea@ilstu.edu) to re-open access to SuperSaas.
  • Your ISU instructor will then be notified of the new window to schedule and you must reschedule during this time period.
  • You must first delete your missed observation before you can schedule a new one.

Thank you for your cooperation in making the teacher education program a professional learning experience for everyone involved!
